My most effective way of getting in work when there is no grade attached (I tried that this past year, and will keep it up!)… ask the student to stay in during lunch and give them time to complete it. That means 1–2 days a week in my classroom, giving time up for students again. Is this enabling? Maybe. But I do get my own work done while they’re working — unless they need help. And THAT may be the reason the work isn’t finished… yet.
