I recently took a pilgrimage to Iona, Scotland. It is something I have had in my heart to do for 5 years when I first heard about the island. A pilgrimage is often defined as going to seek a religious experience or awakening. That is not the language that fits my orientation around this type of journey. Maybe it’s the word religion that I find off putting as it has come to carry a connotation of rules and rigidity that is the very opposite of the expansive nature of pilgrimage.
