Everyone is awesome, but you need to unlock it.

I recently did a talk about this in Eindhoven and thought I would share also online.

Everyone is awesome. But how is that possible?

Recently I had the following thought:

“You know what, I don’t want to trade my life for anyone else’s. That means I am awesome”

What is ‘being awesome’? In my opinion, it is being confident that no matter what shit you are in, or whatever path on life you are on, that it will bring you to the right place in the end. As long as you just keep on wanting to achieve.

So you’ve had had this ‘I’m awesome’ thought. Fucking ace. Most people I speak too have not. And if you have, some people may say that you are cocky and have a self confidence issue.

But this is the beauty, it doesn't matter to anyone else. All that matters is that you feel it. Whatever.

Nevertheless, I just wanna go through some things that I think are important in life.

Before I start, I just want to talk about the fact that spoons are my favourite piece of culinary. I really wish to own this set, or one like it, one day.

Set aims

To measure anything in life, it is important to set aims. These are things that set a general direction to your life. They do not have to be fixed but if you think about them often enough you become more aware of what matters to you. You may not know what they are, but that’s okay.

Just try lots of stuff.

Your aims will never be achieved over night, it is about the journey.

My aims:

1. To ensure the survival of the human race

2. To have a german shepherd puppy.

Thanks 13 year old me for both of those.

3. To have a spoon collection.

Thanks 18 year old me when I finally realised spoons are the future.

Work backwards (and forwards)

If you have this grand aim to do stuff, whatever this stuff may be you need to be able to think critically about it. The question will be “What steps do I need to take to get there.” For me it went like this:

  1. I need to have influence…..I knew I wasn’t the brightest kid on the block.
  2. Influence…… hmm how can I get that?
  3. Working alone for people can only change so much; unless I go into politics….. pha
  4. Get money and put it in the right places…… if only.
  5. How do I get money? 1. Born into it. Fail. 2. Study hard and get into a good school. Fail. 3. Do startup shit. Fail…. or can it be true?
  6. Bingo. I am insane.

From that moment, I thought to myself “ohh, that could be cool.” But I was scared and had no idea what I was doing. It didn’t take till 2 years ago that I started to get really hands on. Since then have come a long way just by just being in the learning mentality.

If you have this learning mentality, you fall into the proactive group rather than reactive. This ladies and gentlemen is when you walk with confidence and can take on any situation in your path. a.k.a the perceived path of success.

It is that this stage that you grow up and everything that comes at you, you can take. This is where you learn the most because before every opportunity, you give it a once over and think.

Yeah why not? What could go wrong? What could go right?

Moving forward is only natural. It means you’re not dead and are still on your journey.

Reflection

Life is in phases. As long as you keep it that way. I personally don’t write to often but when I do it is a de-brief of a period of my life in a random note or in my life journal that I write in times under the influence of a few marijuana’s.

These documents are then small chapters about things that have happened in life and I like to explain it to people like reading a biography. There are plenty of chapters, things that happen, people come and go.

I feel these documents are ways of writing things down and forgetting about them. Only to be pulled up in times of need and more reflection. People get all fancy over the idea of a mind palace but I prefer to keep it simple. Grab a piece of tech, open google drive and write.

You only know what you have learnt when you reflect. Otherwise you’re always in the now and then it’s too late. Take a step back and appreciate the journey.

Networking

Do it for your passion of making awesome shit and fact that you are driven. Not for what you are working on currently. The most meaningful connections come from when you are genuinely interested in someone else's journey and opinions.

Get to know someone, if they help you out, they motivated you, they helped you see a different perceptive; say thank you. No need to get over zealous about it. (but do mean it)

One thing to note on this, you don’t need to overkill it. Just say what you have to say and move on. First impressions counts, you want be neutral but show interest.

Some people will become part of your journey, but if someone does something big for you. Stick the fuck with them.

Changing and adapting

Change is good, make sure you are changing with the world around you. But don’t loose sight of your aim’s. At various points you will need to be someone else, know something more or put your foot down. I see this as putting on hats when necessary.

The world does not demand that you always know exactly what you are doing, working on, talking about. The world demands that if you don’t know exactly you go out and learn. If you really don’t know then find help. What I am getting at here, you have to wear different hats everyday.

When you wear different hats, some feel better than others.

When they feel better, they could do for the wrong reasons but again, that is okay. It is knowing when to take it off and getting back into your ‘normal’ thought. Hell you end up combining hats in the end. Ninja hat.

Reflect that your change is not diverging from your aims. If you feel strongly enough about it, your path with self correct back onto your true journey.

It will suck

Sometimes the real world slaps you in the face with a giant dildo. At times like this you have 2 options.

  1. Be sad.
  2. Get angry.

Both are fine. Be both of those, but do it alone. Go home, get into bed or go for a run away from your home. It’s you situation and your emotions.

Then you have the second question: How long will I be like this?

  1. A month.
  2. A week
  3. 24 hours.

If you reflect over what just happened, it gives you ability to feel like shit, get over it and move on. As with any big decision though, you should do the following things:

  • Think about it
  • Talk to people about it
  • Sleep on it
  • Masturbate on it.

Side story: It was 3 months ago, I was tired, I bought an iPad pro and traveled France and the UK visiting family. It was when I was back I saw I needed to sell it for the money. I stupidly got conned out of 800 euros in fake notes. That was possibly the worst time. I was extremely gutted. I stayed in bed for 2 days and didn’t talk to anyone. Come Monday I was back in full action over it. Shit happens.

No one else is going to live your journey. You can rant all you want but suck it up.

Be awesome

Side note on writing this, and using the word awesome. I felt like it is/was ego and understand it can be perceived that way, but I really do just want to get the point across that the world is your oyster and you just need accept who you are. If someone can help me with this, please get in contact.

Thanks for Nina, Tino and Pascal for being sic ❤
