Approaching the historical town of Trim; the massive, looming structure of the mighty Trim Castle dominates the skyline for many miles around—just as intended.

Why?

Who created such a gigantic fortress in the middle of some of Ireland’s best land? The Normans.

Why did they do so? To protect and consolidate their gains against the native Irish.

What were the Normans doing in Ireland? What they did best—invasion and conquest. However, they had been essentially invited in when one of the Irish Kings approached the King of England for help with a rival in Ireland.

Why were the Normans in Trim specifically? Apart from the resources and strategic location, the King of England had directed a second senior Norman noble into Ireland intending to prevent the first from establishing complete and potentially independent power on the island—as the Normans had a habit of doing.
