Life and Death in La Frontera
Richard D. Bartlett

The activists out here seem to have found a cure for the sense of overwhelm, shock and anxiety that is crippling so many of the white liberals I’ve met on the East and West Coast.

Local direct action is important in crisis conditions (like here), but it doesn’t challenge the systems that produce the crisis—the systems that are the source of the overwhelm, shock and anxiety. I think it’s acceptable for people to be anxious while they try to find real challenges to those systems. It’s perhaps personally curative to find an immediate and productive activity, but it’s not globally curative—the bad systems survive.
