How will a music label find me?
Being a label owner is a bit like a talent scout in sports. You have a routine of listening on your own circle and your different sources such as charts, podcasts. Then there’s moments where you’re a bit more free or curious and you’ll dig on SoundCloud for a few hours. I found some pretty incredible artists on SoundCloud and I find that it’s easier than ever to find unknown artists, raw talent. It’s pretty exciting and overwhelming.
But as the label grow, you’ll tend to want to sign friends of friends and artists related. Why?
Mainly because, in my case, I want to deal with people I feel it’s great to work with. I won’t sign on a rush, a track that sounds crazy good without knowing who I deal with. Difficult and finicky personas are my pet peave and will try to start far from them. Running multiple projects can become messy with difficult people. Dealing contracts and such is so annoying I’d prefer doing it with someone who clicks with me. I trust my friends more than Facebook.
So what does that tells you?
Stop worrying about labels and instead worry about your network. Spend more time connecting with artists who inspire you. Befriend with newer artists who also struggle. Him or that other dude can be helpful at some point.
The label who needs to work with you will find you at the moment it needs to. Have faith in that, I swear it’s true.
