Meet the artist behind the art:
Deb Clark is a photographer from New Zealand specializing in long exposure landscape photography. Her love for taking photographs takes her on a journey of discovery. Sometimes hiking for hours to get the right shot in the right light, Deb’s collectors will know she puts her heart and soul into every individual piece of art.
Why do you take photographs:
What I love about photography is that it takes you on a never-ending journey of discovery. It sits along nicely with my love of being outside. It gives me reasons for getting up early, for hiking in remote places and puts you completely in the moment taking me away from the often relentless pace of real life. It calms me. When you have a camera in your hand you are completely in the moment. Nothing can touch you here. So good for the soul.
What’s your artistic style:
Long exposure Landscape Photography is where my heart is. I do love trying new things though and try to set myself a side project each year where I can learn. Recently I have been playing with depth of field and macron completed a project late last year ‘Echoes of Light’. Taking an image from good to exceptional is not luck. It’s the result of hard work.
Favorite photograph you’ve ever taken and the story behind it:
Pre-sunrise is my favorite time to shoot. There is something extra special and mysterious that comes through in photos taken at this time and I want people to feel that. I’m always so worried about being late for sunrise I often arrive on location ridiculously early and this was one of those times. It’s about a 40 minute hike in and then a clamor down to the lake edge. The color was coming through in camera while it was still pitch dark and I just knew it was going to epic. I actually got many shots I was happy with this day but this one where the clouds formed that fireball is my favourite. It required 25 seconds and a polariser to smooth the water out enough to highlight that colour and reflection and was taken on my old Nikon d750.
Do you mainly photograph one region or do you travel:
I photograph New Zealand a lot. We are a relatively small country and can fly from one end to the other in a matter of hours. Our landscape is very distinct and an hour or two in the car takes you to somewhere completely different. However, I love to travel internationally and have made a couple of intense photography trips to Iceland and Patgonia, and incorporated photography into trips to Spain, Italy, Vietnam and France. I have had plans cancelled because of Covid but hope to re-book Canada and Norway soon.
What do you ultimately want to accomplish with your art:
I want photography to always be the place I go to where I can just be me. If people look at my images and feel even a little of how I felt in that exact moment, then that is the ultimate compliment.
What impact do you think NFTs will have on your work:
I have been loving seeing work from others I haven’t come across before and it has re-inspired me. It’s been interesting going back through old images with more experienced eyes and thinking about where my art fits in this space. It’s given me direction for where I want to take it. Sales have enabled me to expand my tools and fund photography adventures. It is exciting!
What do you want collectors to know about you and your art:
I take pride in every individual piece. I am committed to absolutely loving what I do, to presenting the very best work I can and to doing it for the rest of my life. Collectors will know I put my heart and soul into every individual piece of art.
