Week 5: Finding Voice

This was probably my most challenging week. I was on vacation all week in Wyoming visiting my family, so finding time to complete work was a challenge. I continued to dedicate some time each night to complete class work and feel proud that I was able to keep up with the work load and spend time with my family.

I began week 5 by looking at an interesting article, “Developing Voice in Digital Storytelling Through Creativity, Narrative and Multimodality”. As a former primary teacher, I understand how important it is to instill a love of literacy at a young age. To do this, I allowed my students to use creative tools to create stories and complete passion projects. Students should be engaged in the literacy tasks they are completing and I truly believe that by giving them choice, it creates a love of literacy.

Daily Create “It’s Your Time”

Daily Create

I had fun with this Daily Create this week. I was at the Cheyenne Mountain zoo and thought it would be fun to get a picture with a giraffe for this project! I found a website where you can make a magazine cover. The website is, “magazineyourself.com”. It was very easy to use and would be a fun tool to utilize in my classroom to allow students to show their understanding of a specific concept. I like to give my students lots of choice and voice and this would be another option for them use. The best part of this website is that it is free!

Spotlight

I am so inspired by the work that is being completed by the individuals in this cohort. It really has been fun to see all of the creative ideas. Here are a few of my favorites from this week:

Assignment One of Two-Recreate a Vintage Poster

I had a lot of fun with this assignment this week. I wanted to use Photoshop, but do not have the program. I searched for something free to use instead. I came upon Pixlr. Pixlr is so similar to Photoshop! I was able to easily edit my images for my poster. I would reccomend Pixlr to anyone looking to edit imgages and do not want to pay for Photoshop.

For my poster, I replaced some of the Batman characters from the vintage poster with newer characters. I added their names to the bottom of the poster. I would have liked to use the same font as the original poster, but couldn’t find that exact font. Overall, I like the way that it turned out and it was fun to work with this media tool.

Assignment Two of Two

I created an, “All About Me” digital story using sketch notes. Sketch notes are something that I have never tried before and believe that they will be beneficial to my students. Instead of just taking a picture of the end result, I used “Lapse it” to display the whole process. This took me forever to record!! I had to hold my phone to record, draw, and entertain a baby. (You will see her bouncing in the background. :-)) Overall, I feel that I ended with a great product and felt very challenged while making it. I thought this project would fit nicely with our weekly theme, “Finding Voice” because it really tells my personal story.

Weekly Critique: Field Trip to Mars

This week, I chose to critique, “Field Trip to Mars”. This bus is awesome! I would for my students to have the opportunity to take a trip on this bus.
