I accidentally took over the Internet.
Yesterday I did something that’s never been done before.
I sold hundreds of items to people without any
of them knowing what they were buying.
And in doing so, I accidentally took over the Internet.
Okay, maybe not the entire Internet, but it felt like it. I’ve never been a part of something that spread so organically.
It started here, a simple post yesterday morning (July 16) designed to evoke curiosity and garner attention from those awaiting my top-secret product launch next Wed, July 23. In response to my request for blind pre-orders, a few of my close friends jumped in first and gave me social support by fronting their cash in exchange for my mystery product. They posted their contributions publicly on my Facebook status.
It felt great. They helped me get over my fear that people would think it’s a dumb idea: “Why would I buy something from you if you won’t tell me what it is?”
And then a few minutes later, several more friends chimed in with their support. And then a few more. And then a few more.
And then something amazing happened.
It blew up.
I couldn’t believe it. Notifications rained upon me like loose shrapnel. My Facebook chat exploded. And that was just the beginning:
- I received emails from total strangers wanting to buy the product they’d heard about but didn’t actually know anything about.
- I got a call from Crowdtilt wanting me to create the first ever fully-blind crowdfunding campaign (I did — you can see it here).
- And after only a few hours, my original post on Medium had hit 2.5K views and was still gaining momentum. I reached 100x more people than I had ever intended. And it all happened because I went against the grain.
I wish I could offer more insight right now, but the fact is that I’m putting everything I’ve got into making this Crowdtilt — which is now available until July 23rd at noon — a smashing success. Like everything I’m offering these days, it appears that you’ll have to wait.
But I have certainly learned one thing in the past 24 hours.
It’s something that a mentor taught me a while ago, but I never truly discovered it for myself until today. I wish I had learned it sooner, so I really hope you’ll help me by sharing this lesson with your networks below:
Conventional methods yield conventional results.
