Who is the Nigger?
Biko Mandela Gray

Excellent piece. I just posted my first essay to Medium which also turns on one of Baldwin’s ideas (and, of course, I quote him), and this popped up afterwards.

Baldwin crams so much into a phrase that it can often take an essay to investigate it all. When I teach “Sonny’s Blues,” I spend two weeks discussing the story with my students and feel as if I’m just getting started. You’ve done such a great job of discussing the ideas his statement implies.

My piece investigates the myth of American exceptionalism. If you have time to read it, I’d love to know what you think. Looking forward to reading more of your work. And more of your close readings of Baldwin.
