I’ve been trying to make a distinction between being ‘nice’ and being ‘kind’.

I emphatically agree. I was raised in a religion which valued “niceness,” and conflated it with kindness. How confused I became when I grew up enough to recognize how unkind some of those nice people were. Nice is a cheap foil if one doesn’t also have the depth of kindness, and an understanding of the difference between the two. I’m still learning how to be kind when I can’t also be nice, which, to my mind, is much better than quietly seething over grudges unaddressed, or poorly addressed. Cheers to difficult nuances that make us better people.
