This is probably off the point of the article but not its title. I recently stumbled on a science book called the Fourth Phase of Water by Gerald Pollack. It is written very simply and explains evidence that water forms gel-like structures that essentially pump protons. Not high energy physics, but this has important implications for the origin of life and the function of living organisms if true.
