We see thousands of pieces of marketing each and every day. It’s everywhere, so much so, that often we don’t consciously notice it anymore. From where you are sitting or standing right now just look around you and count the marketing messages you can see (its a fascinating eye opener).
It has become a game I play. I see a piece of marketing and try to work out THE WHY — why is this here? why am I seeing it? what is the marketer trying to do?
Shall we give it a go? (feel free to take part using the comments to the right)

So what we have is a sponsored add in the form of a poll from Capital One. So what are they trying to do? Remember this is just guess work, we really don’t know the real reason, but we don’t let that stop us!
- I think that using a poll is a clever way to create a piece of marketing that might have a higher CTR (click through rate) than other forms of adverting.
- The “Your response will be kept anonymous.” statement will increase the CTR.
- Not using an image made it stand out from the others on the right hand side of Facebook. Personally I would have been tempted to include an image of a credit card. Maybe they analysed previous advertising and know that this improves the performance of the ad.
- Yes and Not sure options will provide useful data for the brand to use in the future.
Interesting little exercise don’t you think? Try picking out one piece of marketing you see next week and analysing it. Does it work, what could be added or removed to improve it.
