Allow me to connect two of your items together. The main reason Trout homered last night was because White Sox manager Rick Renteria was trying like hell to let Mike Pelfrey get through the fifth inning. Pelfrey had breezed through the first four innings but, as is his wont this year, hit a wall in the fifth. Renteria admitted postgame that he wanted to give a struggling veteran on a team going nowhere this year a chance to pick up the almighty “win”, a prerequisite for which is, of course, finishing that magical fifth inning. Renteria, to his credit, acknowledged his mistake, and that he should have pulled Pelfrey two batters earlier.
