LEGO® Serious Play® with teachers

This week I had a unique opportunity of starting a series of LSP workshops dedicated to teachers. Teachers, especially those working in primary schools, have a lot of contacts with play in their daily job. As I discovered, this does not mean that they are ready to face a Serious Play contest without preconceptions. In the last workshop, we had at first an eagle eye view on LSP methodology and on its scope: to facilitate strategical thinking, problem solving and communicating. Without too many forewords, teachers started playing: at first, skill building in order to make them confident with the methodology and its main tools (i.e. the bricks). Then we focused on the identity of the nightmare teacher. Who is she? Well, most of the people in the team put the minifigure representing the teacher on a pedestal. So, here it is the first takeaway of our workshop. Then, pushing further our research we investigated which are the qualities of the teacher’s role model: competencies, attitudes, personal qualities, knowledge. She must be open-minded, technology oriented, listening and talkative. Children should be at the center of her acting. She has to be a role model. We then deepened the analysis in understanding which are the key factors that can help a teacher to reach her role model and we gave them a prioritisation. My main takeaway after this first workshop was one feedback I received by one of the attendees: “at first I was wavering, but then…”. That’s the kind of magic I love in my job. Sure, I have then been doing some retrospective to improve this first workshop: it’s next version will have some slight changes; however, I think that the main points are already very effective and scalable.
Questa settimana ho avuto l’opportunità per me unica di progettare ed erogare una serie di workshop con LEGO® Serious Play® dedicati agli insegnanti. I docenti, specialmente quelli che lavorano nella scuola primaria, hanno molti contatti con il mondo del gioco durante la loro routine lavorativa abituale. Questo però non implica che siano pronti ad affrontare un contesto di gioco serio senza preconcetti. In questo primo workshop abbiamo iniziato gettando uno sguardo di alto livello su LEGO® Serious Play®: una metodologia per facilitare il pensiero strategico, l’attitudine alla risoluzione dei problemi e la comunicazione. Senza troppi preamboli gli insegnanti hanno cominciato a giocare: anzitutto giro di skill building, di riscaldamento con cui incominciare ad impratichirsi del processo e dei suoi principali strumenti (i mattoncini). Ci siamo poi concentrati sul definire l’identità dell’insegnante da incubo. Ognuno di noi ne ricorda almeno uno, vero? Chi è questo insegnante? Quasi tutti i modelli costruiti avevano l’omino sopra un piedistallo. Ecco, la prima presa di consapevolezza concreta del nostro workshop. Poi, proseguendo nel percorso, ci siamo concentrati sulle caratteristiche dell’insegnante ideale: attitudine, competenze, qualità personali, conoscenze. Oggi, fra le altre, un insegnante deve essere orientato alla tecnologia, avere antenne per captare anche i segnali più flebili, deve essere disponibile all’ascolto e al dialogo. I bambini dovrebbero essere al centro del suo agire. L’insegnante deve essere un modello comportamentale. Abbiamo quindi approfondito l’analisi per analizzare gli agenti e i fattori che possono permettere ad un insegnante di raggiungere il modello ideale e, successivamente, abbiamo dato loro una priorità. La più grande soddisfazione dopo questo workshop mi è arrivata nei giorni successivi da una partecipante: “all’inizio ero titubante, ma poi…”. Ecco, questa è la magia che mi fa amare ciò che faccio. Come sempre ho poi fatto una retrospettiva di questo workshop, per migliorarlo: la prossima versione avrà alcuni piccoli cambiamenti per rendere il flusso più coinvolgente; ritengo però che alcuni punti importanti siano già efficaci e scalabili.
