2019 Bledisloe Cup Preview

The Bledisloe Cup is a test series between Australia and New Zealand, that has become one of the most fiercely contested annual traditions in the sport of Rugby. The All Blacks have held the iconic trophy since 2003, and will look to raise the Cup once again. Last year’s three test Bledisloe Cup series was a disappointing performance by the Wallabies, who not only failed to register a victory, but outside of the third match in Yokohama Japan the games were pretty much over by half-time. The All Blacks registered a clean-sweep for the second time in three years, but there is renewed hope for Australia leading into the 2019 Bledisloe Cup given some key Australian players have performed very well during this year’s Rugby Championship.

The Wallabies will look to benefit from the shortened series and the historic opening match in Western Australia, where a change of venue from the traditional Sydney and Brisbane contests should give the home-side added incentive. This is especially important because Australia haven’t posted two consecutive victories over the All Blacks since 2001. A quick start is essential for a variety of reasons, none more so than the fact that the All Blacks are near unbeatable at home, with the last win in New Zealand for the Wallabies coming in 2001 at Dunedin. Game One will be at Optus Stadium in Perth, a first-ever for the Bledisloe Cup, before the dreaded trip to Eden Park. Following that, the Wallabies have their final preparations for the 2019 Rugby World Cup including a warm-up Test against Samoa at Bankwest Stadium in Parramatta, on Saturday the 7th of September.

Wallabies Preview

The Wallabies will head into the series as significant underdogs, having not won since 2002 and facing a Kiwi side that appears to have far more talent. They were solid enough in their recent win against Argentina in Round Two of the Rugby Championship, but prior to that they were comfortably beaten by South Africa in their most recent clash with a side boasting anything like the quality of the All Blacks. Stranger things have happened in sport, however, and Foxtel and Kayo will be the best place to ensure you don’t you miss any of the action as the Bledisloe Cup free to air broadcasts (ch. Ten) include ad-breaks during play.

All Blacks Preview

The All Blacks, it’s safe to say, have one eye on the upcoming Rugby World Cup, and admitted as much with the teams they fielded in the first couple of games of the Rugby World Championship. They only marginally beat the lowly Argentina and drew with South Africa, but with some big names set to return against Australia they will feel confident in their ability to get the job done against their cross-Pacific neighbours.
