Your Media Business Will Not Be Saved

I noticed this very thought-provoking piece on the future of media in my Medium Daily Digest but didn’t get around to reading it. Then a link to it came from, of all places, the daily email brief put out by my local newspaper. So maybe the narrative of old media as stupid slow-moving dinosaurs that are going extinct because they can’t evolve falls a little short. I like to think of it more in terms of physics than evolutionary biology. The advent of digital is like the Big Bang that blew everything apart in a million different directions. Now we’re watching it all coalesce into new sorts of planets and galaxies. It’s going to be, as the piece states, a violent process loaded with chaos. No one knows what it’ll end up looking like, but the cagy old editors have as good a shot as the brilliant new ones. Because yeah, the central premise that compelling voices and stories with meaning and ballast will ultimately come out on top is exactly right. To borrow a phrase from the late Hunter S. Thompson, being a part of it will be a bloodcurdling kind of fun.
