Read the article, read the responses, and I’ve come to the conclusion you were wrong from the start, kept making it worse, and it took readers to force you to realize you’d screwed up. Yet you haven’t taken down or amended your article to show that you’ve realized your errors.

So please allow me to recap your mistakes, in order, and add a few you may not have considered.

  1. You made an ad hoc diagnosis of a man you did not know based on some statistics you’re aware of. Yet, I as a layman know of at least a dozen other reasons a man might be muttering to himself other than schizophrenia. Just because that bit of knowledge was fresh in your mind does not mean it’s the first answer you should latch onto.
  2. You approached a man in custody under presumably legal circumstances.
  3. You refused to identify yourself as a doctor, much less show them ID.
  4. You were willful and belligerent despite not knowing the full situation.
  5. You assumed the officers were corrupt, criminal, and every other bad thing the media reports have been filling your head with. Yet you never once stopped to think your own behavior might have created your own self-fulfilling prophecy. After all, if you KNOW you’re going to trip and make a fool of yourself on stage before you go out there, you can be assured that you’ll eat it in front of the audience.
  6. As soon as you accused the cops of being corrupt and criminal, they reacted badly to you. Can’t imagine why!

And at the very end, having not learned your lesson, you swear to do it all over again the next time you see someone surrounded by police. No regard for whether the police are doing their job. No regard for whether the person they’re surrounding may have just raped or killed someone. All you see is white cops ganging up on people of color.

It’s easy to listen to hashtag activism and get all worked up about social justice, but you have GOT to balance it out with critical thinking! It seems all noble to be an SJW fighting for your fellow man, but if you don’t verify the situation before jumping into it, you end up looking like Don Quixote tilting at windmills.

Unfortunately, critical thinking among the social justice and activist types is in scant supply these days. Especially if the results of critical thinking ends up running counter to the narrative they believe in. So they shut out the inconvenient facts and stick to the hashtag and the narrative that goes along with it.

And it’s that blind activism that landed your ass in jail for interfering with police business that had nothing to do with you. And the odds are, when that man got to the booking desk at the jail, they would have sent down a psych consult or pulled his previous record, and made sure he got whatever treatment he requires. But I’m pretty sure you didn’t stop to think of that before getting out of the car, huh?
