Thankful Thursdays

I’m coming to you from my hotel in Beaumont this evening. Hurricane Harvey is about to make landfall and Texas is going a little crazy right now. HEB was sold out of water this evening. It’s probably a good time to sit down and focus on gratitude for a minute amidst all the chaos.
These are a few things I’m thankful for today:
My Fantasy Football League
The league is made up of 14 of my college buddies and has been going strong since I graduated. Every year we get together for our draft, and this weekend is the weekend. We’ve done New Orleans the last few years, but we're shaking things up this year and headed to Lake Charles. It’s a huge brofest and it’s awesome. Hurricane Harvey will not beat us (hopefully).
The Travel
I’m working on a lot of different things these days, and these different things take time. It’s tough fitting everything I want to do into the hours I have available. My regular job always has to be the #1 priority, and everything else falls in line behind that. All the work travel I do takes up a lot of hours that could otherwise be spent working on my side projects. Having a stable daily routine and spending every night at home would theoretically improve my productivity. There would definitely be more available hours. But even when I get tired of the traveling, I think it keeps me sane. Life and work can’t get dull for me, because I’m in a new place every day. The travel keeps me from wanting to move on to the next thing. It’s not sustainable forever. For right now though, it’s a positive overall for me.
Mom Is Always Mom
I’m pretty grown at this point. I’m glad my mom still reminds me about little Mom things though, even if I’m not always appreciative of the reminders in the moment. Those reminders from Mom used to be the only thing that got me through life. Nowadays they are focused around weather, RSVP’ing for events, construction and road closures, making sure I have a laundered tuxedo for black tie weddings and that I remember to get gifts for people I have to get gifts for. It’s comforting to know that she’s always still looking out for me.
New Music From T-Swift
How great was that marketing move by her on social media…Deleting everything and just posting that snake video. So great. T-Swift about to drop some bombs on this new album.
The Eclipse, Sun, Moon, Space, Private Space Exploration
That eclipse this week energized the entire country. It honestly wasn’t really that cool in Houston where I was, but the excitement was cool. Our family has deep ties to Texas — we came here in 1824. I always think about how invigorating and scary and exciting and dangerous it was to be an early settler of Texas back then. Just ride in on your horse and pick a spot alongside the river to claim as yours.
Exploring space is that same sort of exciting new frontier. Now that Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos and whoever else is pursuing private space exploration, there should be some major advancements and discoveries in my lifetime. As more companies get involved and it becomes more efficient, commercial space travel will become a real thing. I’m hoping that it’s economically feasible for me before I die. Gotta make some bank first.
