From Startups to Corporations, Companies are Losing Millions (Big M- Millions) By Not Going Solar

We’ve heard it all before, right? “Going solar saves money!” or “Buy Solar Today, Save Today!” but just how much are companies missing out on, and why aren’t these companies boosting their bottom line by going solar?

A Commercial, East-West Design Solar Installation

What if I told you that I could give you a tangible, predictable 16% rate of return on an investment over the course of 30-years? What if I told you there were additional tax credits for investing? And now add on the social-optics that the investment is:

1: 100% Renewable

2: Non-disruptive to the Business

It’s seems like a no-brainer, right? Then, why do so many companies still hold back from going solar?

Well, most often it comes down to pricing. Although, solar pricing has decreased 73% in the last decade, electricity rates have increased by 15% in the same time frame.

This graph, from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), shows the increase in average residential electricity prices as a percentage between 2009 and present. During this period, US residential electricity prices rose by about 15%.

So, even though a system that may have cost $1M in 2009 now costs $270K, it’s still a $270K price tag, and that can seem like a lot for a even the most financially-sound businesses.

What’s not taken into account is that the Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems of 2009 are not the same systems that are being installed today. With new rules and regulations and continuous increases in the efficiency and energy production of the systems, the benefits of solar far outweigh the costs. Additionally, and over its lifetime, Solar Systems for businesses generally provide a solid 16%+ rate of return and a 5–6 year payback. What this means for businesses is that the savings generated from the systems’ energy pays off the cost of the system itself, after which point, all the energy the system produces is technically free.

As energy rates continue to increase (and they will continue to increase), putting a Solar System on your business insulates you not only from future increases, but seasonal fluctuations as well, or times of the year when energy costs are higher.

Although system sizes vary depending on energy needs, every business can reap the benefits of solar, and every business can easily get a quote and even a roof design and layout for free.
