Some people don’t care about or want to make movies about race.
That’s their prerogative. That they have the Wrong Ideas is neither here nor there.
Some folks get great pleasure from pointing fingers at someone else and saying “That’s racist” or “That’s sexist,” and that’s their right. That doesn’t give them veto power over someone else’s art.
James Baldwin wrote about race and sexuality in a time when such topics were not only taboo but outrageously so to the majority; he rarely if ever wrote about the trials and victimization of women. Let’s denounce his work for not being feminist enough.
But as in the case of Coppola, we’ll be bashing an artist’s work for the sin of not being the sort of thing WE’d make if we had that artist’s skill.
You want movies about your concerns? Make ’em. If not, you’re left with the tiny joys of tearing down someone whose crime is not caring about what you care about.
