“Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” written and directed by Amy Heckerling was released in… wait for it… 1982! WTF has this industry been doing since then except lock arms to prevent women from integrating into the mainstream as directors — not to mention in the other crafts? And that’s without even getting into pay equity. For being such a progressive bunch, we have shown ourselves to be hopelessly regressive, biased and out of step with the values we supposedly espouse.
The truth is, as anyone who has sat at a dinner party with a male exec, agent or other power broker after a couple of cabernets, women continue to be perceived as a threat to male dominance in the studio system. The bigotry runs deep. Maybe this generation will set it right… Mine has certainly failed miserably.
