In the second installment of this series, we will focus on the pros and cons of having big families.

2. Families

What does it really mean to have a “big happy family”?

Pros:

  • There’ll always be someone to talk to — Your family will always be there, going through the thick and thin. Remember, blood is thicker than water.
  • Lots of love and support — Whether you passed or failed that job interview, your family will be there to help you move forward.
  • The more the merrier — Celebrations for holidays, birthday parties or wedding celebrations will always be filled with lots of people, food, drinks and fun.
  • More siblings — You’ve been with your cousins for so long, they may as well be your siblings.
  • Affordable travel — Consider living with your aunt or uncle when you visit them in Florida, or wherever they live.

Cons:

  • Sharing is caring — You’ll learn how to share, whether you like it or not.
  • No Privacy — The word “secret” will cease to exist.
  • Reputation — Did you hear that your cousin got into law school? Did you know his older brother just got a pay check of 200 thousand dollars? What were you doing again?
  • Lengthy introductions/farewells — You’ll be spending half the time at parties introducing yourself and saying farewells.
  • Less money — Your parents just paid 100 thousand dollars for your older siblings to attend post-secondary, and they’re now in the process of finding a new job. Expect to have a summer job saving up to pay your own tuition.
