Amazing God
Debunking the notion that God and Science are in conflict
Are you ever tempted to wonder if God really is as powerful and awesome as the Scriptures declare He is? If you’re anything like me at all, you probably answered yes to the question. You see, there are seasons in my life when I feel overwhelmed by circumstances, and it feels as if God couldn’t be further away than it feels like He is in those moments.
So how do I pick my chin up off the floor, tighten my ‘britches’ and move forward again? I’m glad you asked. I simply remind myself of things that amaze me; things that remind me that there is nothing in nature or beyond that can accomplish these feats outside of a very big God!
“One million” seems like a really big number, doesn’t it? Well, when you compute it in seconds, it was just 12 days ago. How far is a light year? Well, consider that light travels at the speed of 186,000 miles per second, so a light year would be 5.88 trillion miles. The Whirlpool Galaxy—one of the better know galaxies in our solar system—is 31 million light years away from earth. The sun (earth’s star) is only 92,960,000 miles away from earth. The sun is approximately 1,000,000 times the size of earth, meaning, if the earth were a golf ball, the sun would be 15 feet in diameter by comparison.
In other words, you could fit 960,000 earths into the sun. Or, for a more useful visual image, as many golf balls as it would take to fill up a school bus. Here’s the clincher for me:
According to Psalm 33:6,9 (NCV) — “The sky was made at the Lord’s command. By the breath from his mouth, he made all the stars….He spoke, and it happened. He commanded, and it appeared.”
Now if that doesn’t amaze you and remind you of how big your God really is, you probably have no pulse! Just my two cents.
