I feel the same way. The previous icon was the coolest thing ever. All those other social media brands stink in comparison.
The new design is neither ugly nor conceptually wrong, but it does follow a typographic trend (high contrast, wedge shaped serifs) that you come across in a lot of places in branding and editorial design. And therefor fails to stand out.

I see the connection to “the tradition of print publishing” but in that regard, they could have stuck with the icon they had before 2015.

It’s a shame really. I liked the geometric M sooooo much!
