Many purchase homes in Westchester County, New York, for the lower crimes rates. But how safe is it really, compared to other counties in New York State?

According to the Federal Investigations Bureau, White Plains, New York, showed an average of 205.90 crimes in 2016, out of the 27 cities in New York State with a population of over 45,000 people. These crimes include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, property crime, and burglary. With these criteria, White Plains ranked the 18th city with the most reported crimes.

Comparing it to the nation (with the same circumstances — populations of over 45,000 people), however, White Plains stands at number 585, placing it more towards the middle of the ranking. Monroe, Louisiana stands at the highest, with an average of 3005.42 reported crimes that year. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the safest city in the United States appears to be Brookline, Massachusetts, which had an average violent crime rate of zero.

All the crimes accounted for in the date provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The average crime rate of the nation is about 458.18, meaning the national average is over double that of White Plains.

Breaking White Plains down further, the majority of crimes were related to property crime. In 2016, there were a total of 931 reported cases. The lowest number of crimes was in the murder category, as there were zero reported murder/nonnegligent manslaughters in White Plains that year.

Over in Monroe, Louisiana, there were about 4,646 property crimes, and 11 murder/non negligent manslaughter reports. In Brookline, Massachusetts, there were 610 reported property crimes and zero reported murder/nonnegligent manslaughters.

Based on nationwide standards, White Plains proved to be one of the safer cities in the United States, landing itself towards the middle of the rankings, both nationally, just within New York State, and solely compared to Monroe, Louisiana, and Bethlehem, Massachusetts.
