I feel that’s largely due to the idea that when moms stay home with their kids, they’re then useless to society. It’s likely also because they don’t get to take a break to be alone or pursue their own interests.
I stay home with my kids because I can’t get a job that pays enough to justify paying for daycare, and it’s depressing on several fronts to have no career.
