The New Age of Freaky Space-Time (Premise)
This is a roleplaying game about what would happen if alien space-gods came to Earth at the behest of cultists who worshipped them. And what would happen if alien races who had lived with us for millennia suddenly came out of their hiding places. And what would happen if humanity not only survived but adapted to this new reality, at the cost of a few billion lives and civilization as we know it.
It started as a mash-up of two great games: Call of Cthulhu and Shadowrun. My first thought was to play it straight: Shadowrun with Lovecraft’s alien races replacing the fantasy races and the “Great Old Ones” replacing the dragons. But then I realized that this mash up created something new. If humanity survives the arrival of the Great Old Ones and the various aliens that visit or even live on Earth, then what is there to fear from cults trying to bring about the arrival of the Great Old Ones? Sure, I could make humans a slave race, but I think that we’re vicious and smart enough to survive and even thrive in this strange new world.
But if humanity survived, it would be changed; we would become more like the Mythos creatures, and the magic and weird science of the Mythos would distort humanity also, as would the presence of the gods and aliens. In this world, what would corporations mean? Not as much as in our world. The difference between the world of the Mythos and the our world is that you can’t bullshit your way to the top. There is no fractional banking that works with the magical power necessary to cast spells or open gates to other dimensions. You either have the power or you don’t.
Without the threat of the Great Old Ones destroying the world or corporations destroying their lives, characters in such a game could do what they wanted, go where they pleased. “Sandbox” gaming, in which PCs travel and explore the world with little concern for an overarching plot, would become a viable mode of play (but not the only mode).
