10 Truths about tennis elbow

Juan Reque with Maria Sharapova after capturing her first Roland Garros title in 2012
  1. Tennis elbow has been called “tendinitis” for decades. But this has changed recently and now tennis elbow is mostly called a “tendinosis”. The difference is that a tendinitis is by definition an inflammation of the tendon. Most of the tennis elbows don’t present inflammation. The person only suffers from pain and tenderness.
    2. The pain and tenderness is in the outside (lateral) part of the elbow. The forearm muscles and specially their tendons become damaged from overuse — repeating the same strenuous motions again and again.
    3. Professional tennis players rarely suffer from tennis elbow. The reason behind this is that they have a good technique and they have a very strong forearm.
    4. Most of the recreational players with tennis elbows are novice players. They have a bad technique and this can be one of the reasons to develop this injury.
    5. Another reason is the lack of strength. Not many recreational players go to the gym. And if they go they normally don’t do exercises for the wrist, the forearm and the elbow.
    6. Even though the main reason for tennis elbow is overuse, there is mostly a moment when the player feels that he or she got injured. It doesn’t necessarily has got to be playing tennis. Sometimes throwing the ball to their dog, doing some exercises at the gym or just a bad movement can trigger the injury.
    7. Once the pain is there a player shouldn’t play. Specially the first days after feeling the pain. Being smart means identifying the injury and taking care of it right away. If the player plays with the pain for a long time most likely it will get worse. The situation then will be loosing months and months of practice instead of just a couple of days.
    8. To get rid of the pain the player has got to work on the technique and pay attention on the materials(racquet, strings…)
    9. One of the best treatments is deep tissue massage or ART. It will help start the recovery.
    10. A player will never get better if he or she doesn’t address the problem from the bottom up.
