Day Twenty-Five (November 17, 2015): 1.2hr

Discussed the conclusion of Xenophon’s Education of Cyrus 8.8.

We also talked about problems that were faced in the readings:

6.1.38–40 how to deal with personal loyalty when followers screw up?

6.1.37 being too gentle, compassionate

6.1.7–12 How do you keep your followers motivated?

(November 18, 2015)Read Plutarch’s Life of Alexander the Great, Parts One and Two (of seven):3 hrs

As a military commander no one can compare to Alexander, but Cyrus’s infrastructure lasted longer. Cyrus was the greatest military commander of his time, but Alexander did not have as much time as Cyrus to build his empire.

Cyrus was a wiser and more diplomatic ruler than Alexander was. Alexander was young and I don’t think he was wise enough to rule, but then he died young and didn’t have the chance to actually rule an empire.

Day Twenty-Six (November 19, 2015): 1.2 hr

We Discuss the sources for Alexander the Great. Comparison to Cyrus. Professor asked a great question to day, is giving a good way to earn people’s loyalty? I said I didn’t think so and gave the example of MC Hammer. I don’t think that mindset work with American culture.

I think that part three, four, and five were implausible. I think they were passed down by the people in the kingdom to glorify their leader.

Looking at a job listing for the Dean of the college of arts and sciences at Clark University in Atlanta. Knowing that there is a long list of knowledge, skills, and abilities expected of the role. I do think Alexander would make a good candidate. Because running a school is much like running an army or any other group. If he can do that successfully he can run any group of people. I think that Olympias might be more qualified though. In 20 years I think I could also be qualified for this psoition
