Join us for a special Scribes of the Cairo Geniza event!

Lots of people are turning to Zooniverse for a distraction while your lives are disrupted. We thank you for your help, and we’re trying a new approach to be more present online and engage with all of you during this time.

Special Event

Do you have questions about the Cairo Geniza fragments or our project? Want to learn more about manuscripts you’ve been classifying? Join us for a special Scribes of the Cairo Geniza project event! Penn Libraries and Columbia University Libraries invite you to help classify and transcribe this unique collection of historic materials. On April 7, 2020, from 12–2 PM (Eastern Standard Time), we will have a Zoom presentation for interested participants.

In this presentation, Emily Esten, project manager for Scribes of the Cairo Geniza, will provide instruction on how to classify and transcribe the fragments on the site. Michelle Chesner, Norman E. Alexander Librarian for Jewish Studies at Columbia University Libraries, will present some of the manuscripts included in the project that are from Columbia’s Judaica collection.

We are limiting this event to the first 100 participants, so please register here. You’ll receive login information in an email the day before the event. If you can’t make it to the live event, no worries! As long as you are registered, we can send you a link to the recorded session. If you have any questions or concerns about this event, please contact Emily Esten (judaicadh@gmail.com), Penn Libraries.

This event would not be possible without the support from the Norman E. Alexander Library for Jewish Studies & the Digital Scholarship Unit at Columbia University Libraries; the Digital Scholarship unit and Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies at Penn Libraries.

Thank you again for all your hard work! As always, you can join us in classifying and transcribing fragments from the Cairo Geniza at scribesofthecairogeniza.org.
