The United States Marine Corps War Memorial is a national memorial located in Arlington County, Virginia, United State. Also called Iwo Jima Memorial was created in September 1954 by artist Felix de Weldon and opened on November 10, 1954. It is 60 feet tall and was constructed of bronze. Weldon was inspired to sculpt the monument after seeing a Pulitizer Prize-winning photo by photographer Joe Rosenthal of the royal flag raising on February 19, 1945. The Cape Coral Iwo Jima monument was made 10 years later in 1964 and commissioned by Gulf American Corporation for inclusion in The Rose Garden, Cape Coral’s first tourist attraction, many think it is a replica but it is not, it is one of the three originals created by the sculptor Felix De Weldon. The 20-foot monument is the smallest and is in Cape Coral at the southern end of the Four Mile Cove Ecological Reserve in full view of all who traffic on the Veterans Parkway. Measuring 20 feet from the base to the tip of the flagpole’s steel pole is about a third of the monument found at Arlington. The sculpture was made of dressed concrete on a rebar and steel superstructure and weighs 67,000 pounds. This park where the statue was located was closed in 1970 amid increasing expenses and both the statue and the parquet were abandoned. In 1980 this statue was transferred to a bench at the corner of Del Prado Boulevard and Viscaya Parkway and they contacted a sculptor from Fort Myers named Wilkins for its restoration and in 1998. Iwo Jima was again transferred to his place in the Ecological Reserve Four Mile Cove. In 2011 it was restored to correct cracks created by concrete expansion and contraction due to high temperatures in Southwest Florida. This work created by the sculptor Felix De Weldon. We are in the presence of a sculpture in the round where the third dimension is represented in true proportion and often in a natural size. It is a job where it can be seen from different positions it will always have the front side which is the most attractive to all but has the advantage of being observed every detail, every line expressed in all the angles of the sculpture. The called Iwo Jima Memorial is a military commemorative statue dedicated to all members of the United States Marine Corps who died defending their country in 1775. It represents five-foot soldiers and a navy officer who planted the United States flag in the Mount Suribachi after the battle of Iwo Jima. This work has great meaning for society and for all those people who pay tribute in honor and thanks to all who died for a just cause, to defend their country and their ideals. This statue has a very important value for the country because it is the representation of those who died in the war.
