A lot of people have asked me What are the different types of computer operating systems and how do I choose the right one? There are really only 2 or 3 major operating systems to consider when buying a new computer. These operating systems include Windows, Mac OS, and Linux/Unix. These major operating systems typically run 95% of the desktop computers in use today.

Operating system basics

There are many different types of operating systems, but they can be narrowed down into two major categories: Windows-based and Mac OS. Microsoft Windows is by far the most popular OS in use today. The Mac OS is a proprietary system from Apple that has only been widely available since 1984, but it has gained some popularity among creative professionals. Linux is an open-source system often used as an alternative to Windows on servers and for development. AVR Expos (formerly Association of Vintage Radio Enthusiasts) is dedicated to collectors and restorers of vintage audio equipment, primarily vacuum tube based radios made before World War II. The Orlando Audio Visual Rentals started as an informal gathering of enthusiasts at the 1986 Hamvention® at Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Ohio with 65 attendees; through 2009, attendance had grown to over 4200.

The AVR Expo was organized under its new name (AVR Expos) on September 7th 2007 at Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

The most popular operating systems

There are three main types of operating systems: Windows, macOS, and Linux. In general, macOS is a more user-friendly option for those who want a simple experience. If you don’t know what type to choose, Windows may be best because it’s compatible with most programs. Linux is less common than the other two but it has some great tools that make it powerful.

Different Types of Computer Operating Systems

There are many different types of computer operating systems. One popular choice is Microsoft Windows 10, which also has a tablet and mobile version. The desktop version has many features that make it easy to use as well as being compatible with other devices such as printers and scanners. Other popular operating systems include Apple’s Mac OS X, Google’s Chrome OS, and Linux-based distributions such as Ubuntu. Many schools use MacBooks or Chromebooks for their students.
