Introduction: Una Vita Musicale

My name is Julia and I am a college student from California currently studying abroad in Reggio Emilia, Italy for the next three months. Over the course of this semester, I will be researching and reporting weekly on a topic I’ve been passsionate about for as long as I can remember: music. More specifically, I will be comparing and contrasting the different popular music artists that emerge into the music industry from California versus the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna (in which Reggio Emilia is located).

I chose this topic for a three important reasons, the first being my innate love for music. I am someone who loves listening to music constantly, has playlists for different moods or activities, and really enjoys discovering new artists and genres. Therefore, if I can bring this music appreciation into the classroom, why not? The second reason I chose this subject to research was that I believe music is something that means a lot to a large portion of the population of any country. With this in mind, there will be no shortage of people to share their thoughts and impressions of different styles of music from two different parts of the world. The third and final reason I chose to comapre and contrast music is because I believe that music is a uniting force for people of all cultures, and if we can bring to light the similarities of the hit music from these two regions, maybe we can unite some people too.

One of my research tactics, aside from online research, will be interviewing multiple people (of varying ages) in order to gain their perspective on the different types of artists that make it in the music industry from California and from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. This will ensure that I have viewpoints from those on both sides of the equation, so as to eliminate bias. Additionally, I will be analyzing how these artists perform on a global scale, looking at album sales and concert tour locations in different countries around the world to make sure the topic is covered from a global standpoint.
