Homemade shoes can be comfortable when used either at home or when going out. Following these easy steps, you can learn how to create your own boots.
1. Generate an Idea
First, you need to design your shoes to generate an idea. This design phase will help you identify the design and details of your shoes, ensuring that they will give you all the comfort you need.
2. A last is needed
You will definitely need a last to work on. You can either buy one from a shoemaker or create your own one by following the next steps.
3. Cast your foot
Cover the interior walls of a large box with cellophane wrap. You will need plenty of room around your foot. However, more space left will require more alginate to be used.
4. Prepare the Mold
Most craft stores sell bags of different weights with alginate. Follow the instructions on the bag and mix the alginate with cold water in a large bowl until the composition is gloopy.
5. Prepare your own feet
Make sure your foot is clean and naked before putting it into the mix. You can have your foot a bit suspended into the air if you want alginate under it. Then, add the mix until it slightly covers your ankles.
6. Making your foot cast into a last
It takes about 20 minutes for the mix to turn into jelly. After removing your foot, add casting mix in the space left. Move the box back and forth to make sure that the casting enters in all spots. After drying, remove the alginate and your cast will be ready.
7. Draw your pattern
Following your initial design, put tape on the cast to determine the shape of the pattern. Draw the pattern on the masking tape and cut any additional material that won’t be used. You should get at least four parts: vamp, counter, toe and sides.
8. Trace and cut your patterns
Remove the masking tape and flatten it. Add a few extra inches to ensure you have spare material.
9. Cut your fabric
Follow the lines on your patterns and cut carefully, taking into consideration the spare layers. Write on each pattern what part it represents so that you know where it needs to be sewed.
10. Sew it together
Line the patterns and add a pin to keep them together. Follow the lines drawn and only sew on the spare material. After finishing, flip the patterns back over.
11. Adding eyelets
After creating the shoe tongue, add eyelets for the shoe laces.
12. Prepare the sole
Put the cast on the sole material and draw its contour. Soak it in water for a day, then tie it around the last and wait for it to dry.
13. Add the sole
Set the sole on the bottom part of your pattern, while the laces are tied. After this, add a final leather layer over it so it doesn’t look bad.
So, now you know even you can create your own boots! Follow these steps and you can have your own custom made shoes.
