Best Pokemon to take down gyms and raids
Right now in the meta game there are a few Pokemon in Pokemon GO that dominate gyms, and are tough in raids. Let’s take them down!
Overall, the best offensive move types are Fighting, Dragon, Electric, and Ice. If you haven’t already, I suggest investing in a strong non-Fighting type with Fighting-type moves, such as Heracross, Pinsir, and Ursaring. They have the highest attack and endurance against Snorlax and Blissey.
For best Pokemon counters, I am factoring in a combination of moveset and max CP.
Type: Dragon / Flying
Moveset: Steel Wing, Dragon Tail, Dragon Breath; Hurricane, Hyper Beam, Outrage
Best attack type: Ice (x2), Dragon, Fairy, Rock
Best counters: Lapras (with ice moves), Articuno, Jynx (with ice moves), Kingdra (with ice / dragon moves), Gyarados (with dragon moves)
Dragonite has double weakness to ice, so capitalize on that as much as you can. Be careful when using your own Dragonite against one, unless you’re sure the opponent Dragonite has no dragon moves.
Type: Water / Flying
Moveset: Bite, Dragon Tail; Hydro Pump, Outrage, Crunch
Best attack type: Electric (x2), Rock
Best counters: Zapdos, Jolteon, Magneton, Electabuzz, Raichu
Gyarados has few weaknesses and many defenses. Take it down with as many electric Pokemon as you can. If you don’t have many, make sure to dodge the charge move.
Type: Rock / Dark
Moveset: Bite, Iron Tail; Stone Edge, Fire Blast, Crunch
Best attack type: Fighting (x2), Fairy, Ground, Bug, Steel, Water, Grass
Best counters: Machamp, Heracross, Pinsir (with fight moves), Ursaring (with fight moves), Primeape
Tyranitar has many weaknesses, but Fighting will take it down quick. Careful using Rock or Grass Pokemon against Tyranitar even though it has an attack advantage, since Iron Tail and Fire Blast can take them down quickly.
Moves: Zen Headbutt, Lick; Hyper Beam, Earthquake, Heavy Slam
Best attack type: Fighting
Best counters: Heracross (with fight moves), Pinsir (with fight moves), Ursaring (with fight moves), Alakazam (sometimes), Machamp (sometimes), Primeape (sometimes)
Alakazam with Focus Blast is a good choice, but if Snorlax has Lick then Alakazam will go down fast. Machamp and Primeape are good choices, but if Snorlax has Zen Headbutt then they also go down fast.
Snorlax is by far the trickiest Pokemon boss to deal with. If you haven’t already, invest in strong Heracross, Pinsir, or Ursaring with fighting moves. They’ll also serve well against Tyranitar and Blissey.
Moves: Pound, Zen Headbutt; Hyper Beam, Dazzling Gleam, Psychic
Best attack type counters: Fighting
Best counters: Heracross (with fight moves), Alakazam (with Focus Blast), Pinsir (with fight moves), Ursaring (with fight moves)
Fighting type Pokemon aren’t great against Blissey because the chances are pretty high that Blissey has a Psychic-type attack. Short of these options, a Pokemon with a generally high attack is a good option. If Blissey hasn’t used its Charge attack in a long time, chances are it has Hyper Beam which is pretty devastating if you don’t dodge.
Type: Ground / Rock
Moves: Mud Slap, Rock Smash; Stone Edge, Earthquake, Megahorn (Grass)
Best attack counters: Water (x2), Grass (x2), Ground, Ice, Steel, Fighting
Best counters: Exeggutor (with Grass moves), Venusaur, Machamp, Vaporeon, Lapras, Feraligator, Kingler, Gyarados (with Hydro Pump), Meganium, Vileplume, Tangela, Victreebel, Machamp, Heracross (with fight moves), Pinsir (with fight moves)
To stick on the side of caution, I recommend using Grass type Pokemon against Rhydon, since Megahorn can bring down your Water Pokemon. Fighting Pokemon are also a safe bet.
Type: Grass / Psychic
Moves: Bullet Seed, Extrasensory; Seed Bomb, Psychic, Solar Beam
Best attack counters: Bug (x2), Fire, Ice, Flying, Poison, Dark, Ghost
Best counters: Pinsir (with Bug moves), Gengar, Scizor (with Bug moves), Heracross (with Bug moves), Flareon, Moltres, Charizard
Bug, ghost, and fire type Pokemon are best against Exeggutor. Don’t use Pokemon with fighting moves since they’re wasted on Exeggutor, a Psychic type.
