Is it worth it? My trip to see the Oscar Mayer Frankmobile
WYALUSING, P.A. — The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is undoubtedly one of America’s favorite food shaped automobiles. Driven by Frankfurters, also known as Hotdoggers, the vehicle travels around the country bringing smiles to the faces of the people who seek it out.
On a Sunday afternoon in August, my boyfriend Peter and I went in search of the national icon. We drove an hour from upstate New York, through the winding hills of Pennsylvania to get a glimpse.
The history of the famous wheeled hot dog begins in 1873, when a teenaged Oscar F. Mayer moved from Bavaria to the United States. He started his first job in meat packing and 10 years later, opened his own business.
It was during the Great Depression in 1936 when the Wienermobile was launched, according to the Oscar Mayer website. The goal was to lift the country’s spirits during a dark time. After a nine year hiatus, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile hit the roads again, making memories as it traversed the country’s roads.
