Hounded Healer

Part 9 of ‘Jumbled up in Jerusalem’

Read Part 8 ‘In the Graveyard’

Crossing back again, a large crowd gathered round Jesus. A synagogue leader, Jairus, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading, ‘My teenage daughter is dying. Please come and heal her with your touch.’ Jesus went with him, of course the crowds went too, pressing against him.

But amongst this horde of crushing humanity was a woman with a haemorrhage, she had been bleeding for twelve years. All her money had gone on doctors, but they only made her worse. She’d heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd, touching his cloak, thinking, ‘One touch and I’ll be healed’. She stopped bleeding immediately, she was completely healed. But Jesus noticed the power that had gone out of him. He stopped in the crowd, full of concern, and said, ‘Who touched my clothes?’ His disciples answered, ‘Everyone’s pushing and shoving and you ask who touched you, are you serious? Do you really want to find whoever it was? We need to crack on and save this man’s daughter.’ Jesus ignored them, nothing was more important to him than connecting with one person who believed in him. Then the woman, who knew he was looking for her, fell at his feet and told him everything, she was petrified. Jesus said, ‘Sister, your faith healed you. Peace, you’re suffering is over.’

While Jesus was speaking, messengers came from Jairus’ house, ‘Your daughter died, don’t bother the rabbi any more.’ Ignoring them, Jesus held him and said, ‘Don’t worry, believe!’ He left his followers behind and only took Peter, James and John with him. When they reached Jairus’ home, everyone was crying and wailing. He went inside and said, ‘You can stop crying now, she’s not dead, only sleeping.’ But they took the piss out of him, so he kicked them out. He took her mother and father and the three followers and went to the child. He took her hand and said, ‘Talitha koum — you can get up now youngster.’ She stood up immediately. They were amazed. He told them to say nothing about it and to give her some food.
