‘intercultural’ understanding

“In my film group, there is an Australian, two Africans…”

She interrupted me. “What which kind of Australian?”

“Huh?”

“You mean ‘Anglo-Australian’ like white?”

Oh I’m so sorry.

This blew my mind. I grew up thinking that ‘Australians’ were depicted as ‘white.’ My chaplain gave a good point. Now, Australian can be anybody — any person with a cultural background who is born in Australia.

I’m an Australian. But with black hair and yellow skin. Yet, I deemed the Africans as Africans when they were also Australian.

Oh dear.

I will be careful next time when I talk about people’s cultures.
