RecipeSage v2.1 Released!

I’ve been working on RecipeSage for almost a year now, and with the release of v2 and v2.1 I’m getting closer to my optimal recipe keeper application.

When I first envisioned a recipe keeper application, I wanted something lightweight, easy to use, and cross-platform. As I discussed with family and friends more, I realized that the cooking community was in need of a free platform where people could gather and collaborate on recipes in one central place.

Well, with RecipeSage v2 and v2.1 I’m proud to say that I’m getting very close to that vision. Here are some of the cool things I’ve added in the last two big releases:

Tile view

I wanted RecipeSage to take better advantage of desktop devices, and I wanted to leverage the wonderful images that users upload.

The new tile view

As you can see, it works and flows better on desktop browsers. List view is still around, and is still the default view for now. I have no plans of removing list view, it’s just another customization option. In the future I may switch the default view to tile view (for new users/devices only, old users/devices can opt in).

Split pane view

Split pane view started as an experiment. I was trying to find a way to make the app feel more natural on desktop, and came across an interesting suggestion — keep the side menu open.

The new split pane view

As you can see, the split pane view works nicely in conjunction with tile view. The side menu button is gone, and instead the side menu sits open at rest.

This feature is toggleable for large screen devices only, since there isn’t enough space on smaller screens. If you don’t see the setting in the settings page for split pane view, likelihood is that your device is too small.

Performance, flow, and IOS Improvements

As always, I am continually making small improvements to performance for the application. This time around it’s in the form of better image caching. Images will be cached for longer and will therefore load faster.

The framework also received an update, so general app flow should be better, especially on IOS devices.

Lastly, I fixed some nagging issues with the popover menus on IOS devices. I don’t use an iPhone, so I wasn’t aware until a user mentioned that there were some issues! I’ll try to test more frequently on my iPad from now forward.

As always, please let me know if you have ideas for new features, discover issues or bugs, or have questions!

Best,
