Okame Cherry Tree: First Explosion of Color In Spring for Your Nashville Landscape

Just when you’ve had enough of the winter blahs, the Okame Cherry Tree explodes with color in early spring (actually February here in Middle Tennessee) for your Nashville landscape. Be aware that sometimes here in Nashville, zone 6b-7, it gets zapped by a freeze before the luscious pink blooms have fully opened, but it’s still beautiful and makes quite a show in the garden when nothing else is blooming! As an added bonus, when fall comes around, this lovely tree has amazing orange-bronze folliage as well.

Growing Conditions for Okame Cherry Tree in Nashville

Growing to about 20–30 feet in height and width and being a fast grower makes this tree ideal as a specimen or in a grouping in your Nashville landscape. The Okame Cherry tree thrives in full or partial sun, and even tolerates a variety of soil conditions. Once established, it is low-maintenance and it has an upright, vase-like shape which makes it a great choice for small yards as well as large landscapes.

Because of it’s eye-popping color, in 1990 the Japanese gifted thousands of cherry trees to the U.S. capital in a show of friendship which is celebrated each year at the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. . Here in Nashville, Tn, we have our own celebration each spring at the Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival held this year on April 14, 2018 at Nashville Public Square.
