Great American Novels that Inspire

The Alchemist, a novel by Paulo Coelho

In the introduction of The Alchemist a Brazilian journalist is quoted as saying that President Clinton had been photographed reading The Alchemist and that sometime later in Turkey the same journalist opened a copy of Vanity Fair and found Julia Roberts declaring that she adored the book. Walking down the streets of Miami he also heard a girl telling her mother, “You must read The Alchemist!”

Point being that this is a book that touches something deep within all of humanity, that being Life Purpose (or Personal Legend in the wording of The Alchemist). Once you know your Life Purpose you will go forward as Santiago did, (the main character in The Alchemist, and overcome all obstacles along his journey.

The Alchemist is a great story, one that will captures readers on the very first page, as the mystery of The Alchemist is alive throughout this book. It is full of magical adventures as well as times for contemplation and will guide you gently into Santiago’s own journey from which you may learn your own Life Purpose and how obstacles can be your greatest gifts, depending on how you meet them.

Santiago learned many things along his path of Life Purpose, one of the most important being to always follow his heart. “Wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure. You’ve got to find the treasure so that everything you have learned along the way can make sense.” When Santiago listened to and followed his heart he understood what love truly is and everything did made sense to him. This is was a turning point for him growing into his true powers.

The second greatest lesson Santiago learned was that of integrity, being true to himself, to his heart and to his Life Purpose no matter how great the obstacles. Santiago asked one of his many guides: “And what went wrong with others who went looking for their Personal Legends and were unable to do so?” “They were looking only for gold,” his companion answered. “They were seeking the treasure of their Personal Legend without wanting actually to live out their Personal Legend.” As he met his obstacles, and there were many, he grew into the truth of himself and gained many powers. His fears and doubts left him, as there was no space for them any longer.

By staying in integrity, that being, on Life Purpose in all actions and deeds, Santiago learned how to stay present to himself and held no worries for the future, knowing that his heart would lead the way. As he continued to walk and grow into his path of Life Purpose whatever he put his attention came from his heart and was loved. It was said that he had a Midas touch, that he turned lead into gold, he become a true Alchemist.

We are all Alchemists. We all come into life with a Purpose, we simply need to find it. It lives in our hearts and we grow into our Personal Legend by meeting obstacles in a new way, by following our hearts and staying in integrity. Our heart will teach us what love is. Love exists all around us, in the air, in the Earth, in the Sea, in humanity, you may have to look more deeply to find it. But our hearts know.

Your heart will not lead you to outer gold but to inner gold from which all abundance will come to you, as it did for Santiago.

Put your attention on your heart as Santiago has and everything will make sense to you. Everything of fear and doubt will simply slip away. This book will be your guide. A guide of adventure, magic and mystery.
