Drone Journalism
Drone Journalism is the use of unmanned filming technology to gather information.
University of North Carolina has done research and testing on journalism drones for the past years. They have also been looking into the laws and Constitution, debating whether it is legal or not.
The article describes how the drones work and what they will be used for, as well as tells the reader where the drones will be flying. There are six operating test sites at different universities all across the country.
Each one is given a certain state to fly over and record different things, such as air traffic. There is currently no policy on Drone Journalism, but rules are planning to form.
The Professional Society of Drone Journalists gives us a lot of information on why it is beneficial. If we can use drones in dangerous areas, such as, war zones we can let people know the dangers around to a higher extent.
If we can use unmanned technology instead of sending journalists to places they could be hurt or even killed, like intense riots, we can still have footage of the news and be able to tell people what is going on.
The article is very supportive of Drone Journalism and they have articles and videos that they have been working on. The PSDJ also mentions the controller of the drone being required to remain in vision of the unmanned technology.
Therefore the operator has to be semi-close to a situation but could blend into crowds or hide out instead of hauling a giant camera and tripod around with them.
I believe Drone Journalism is a very smart invention that should be put to good use. Journalists are always talking to neighbors and victims after shootings, fires, riots and etc.
If we could send them earlier with drones we would be able to watch the action and feel like we are next to it.
I think it will be beneficial and could protect journalists from the many risks they take when they are out in their fields.
It is a dangerous job and we always read about some of them being killed in situations because of the crazy people in this world. Journalists are payed to give us information and keep us updated with current news, but they should be able to keep themselves safe while doing so and drones can help.
The downfall to drones can be bad journalists using them in places they should not be, or even violating peoples privacy rights and trespassing on properties they should not be.
They can get away with a lot more if an object is flying over and a person is not walking around. We need to set rules and guidelines to where journalists can use video surveillance and where they cannot.
I do not think a lot of them would take advantage but the options is definitely there for them to take.
Overall I am supportive of Drone Journalism because it will help make a journalists job safer, easier and quicker.
If we love to be filled in constantly and told what is going on, this is a great way to help journalists satisfy that desire of citizens.
