The persistence shown by Cunningham must have been prompted by more than just his natural inclination and desire. I find that in many cases, children with enough resistance given them will inevitably either gravitate toward or away from the topic of conflict. This gravitation often follows them through adulthood and into their likes/dislikes, career choice, and personal or family decisions. It is amazing how the actions of a parent to a child during a year or two of critical development can change not only their child’s character and decisions but also the lives of all those who come in contact with that person. In Cunningham’s case that includes hundreds of thousands of people as a group and a now an individual from a small town thousands of miles away: me.
