On this symbolic Bastille Day for us French, we have decided to make the Station desktop app open-source ✨ We want to hand it to mankind, hoping it will outlive those who created it.

We’ve been through an amazing adventure together with you over the last 4 years. And our team would like to thank you for that. We have decided to go work on different projects in the future but some of you in the past had asked us to make our code open-source so you could contribute. While we have decided to end the adventure, there are still many of you using the app every single day, all over the world. We could have simply shut it down. But we’d rather hand it to the world for free and see our mission live on past our own creation.

The original desktop app will stop working on August 30th, 2021 🗓

You can already download the new open-source version here. Starting August 30th, it will be the only way to use Station. Starting today, we will not provide any support for Station anymore.

If you are a developer, you can contribute to the project here 🤖

Some important implications for you:

  • All your data will be deleted in compliance with GDPR on August 30th, 2021. It will not be sold to any third party. Never has, never will.
  • For that reason, you will have to reinstall all your applications on the new version.
  • All your data will be saved locally on your desktop in this open-source version, not in the cloud.
  • As a result, you won’t need to login to use the app anymore.

We hope a new community can form around Station and we are excited to see what you will make of it!

PS: a longer article will be shared with you this year, explaining the things we did well and things we didn’t do well, hoping others can learn from it.

With love
The Station Team
