This needed to be called out. Thankfully, increasingly there are people like my girlfriend who was invited to do her PhD at NASA and took a pass not only because she realized she’d be signing up for seven years of slave labor ($24k/yr) but also because she realized she could make a far more significant positive contribution to society all on her own.
