Are You Ready to Say “I love you”?
Sarah Cooper

I think “I love you” can mean a lot of other things, too. I certainly use it to mean “I appreciate you” and “I enjoy spending time with you” and “having you on the planet makes my world a happier place” and all kinds of things like that…I say these things as well as just “I love you” to my friends, family, and lovers, and I don’t think that just because I don’t always mean “I am committed to you” or some such thing from your second list, that that means I am not REALLY saying “I love you.” I’m just not using it the way you choose to mean it.

I think it is a good idea to make sure you and another person have the same understanding of love, but I don’t think I would ONLY use it when I mean the things in your second list.
