Building a Technology team? Little tips for a good start.
Building a good technology team with the challenges caused by the current scenario may seem difficult, but it is not impossible.
Even with several business sectors affected by the pandemic, technology is an increasingly strong field, and by following the correct steps, you will be able to scale a quality team, as the demand for it grows more and more. With that, many talents can be found in the market.
Tips for making a good team
The first step to build a good technology team for your company is to know which technology professionals you need initially, for the growth and development of your projects.
Based on this, it is possible to better structure the goals and objectives and initiate a better development of the company and its products. Furthermore, with these tips the process can be much easier.
Keep in mind the current context of the company
To facilitate the choice of professionals for your technology team, it is ideal to have a clear view of the objects already stipulated for the team to achieve, whether they are goals for a new product or for adding innovative features to an existing one.
It is also interesting to analyze the company’s current scenario, observing opportunities, weaknesses, strengths and competitors, so that team members can help strengthen the project.
Observing these points will help a lot in knowing which profiles need to be selected in the composition of the technology team.
Structure a team with several specialties
By getting a team with several specialties focused on the technology sector, with the same common goal of delivering results, it will be possible to obtain different perspectives on a common problem, having better insights to solve problems.
But be careful: transparent communication is needed between all team members so that the objective is clear to everyone, maintaining the same communication and optimizing the idea process to solve these problems.
And speaking of transparency, this is one of the most important points when building a technology team. Make it clear to all members what their roles and goals are.
Even if at times some members have to perform functions outside the plan, explain the current situation of the company and try to resolve it as best you can, but ideally, each one has an established role, ensuring better efficiency.
It is also important to give a voice to everyone, listening to suggestions and respecting the opinions that are appropriate and can add to the company’s progress, in this way, everyone will be more motivated and will work better together to achieve the best results.
And to expand?
You need to start structuring the real team, defining roles and responsibilities. In the beginning you take on various roles. After the product-market-fit, it is necessary to think about issues such as Governance and Culture, without forgetting innovation. There are more people on the team, more people to communicate, align and ensure alignment. It has a lot of hand-over and hand-off. That is why it is extremely important to make clear the vision, values and what hypotheses the company is trying to validate.
I believe that in the go-to-market phase, the challenge is leadership training. In my case, I decided to train internal leaders, which helped me a lot in terms of culture.
But one thing I learned a lot is that we need to create an environment where people can take care of people. As director, I couldn’t manage a bigger team, but I managed to pay attention to leaders and some talents, so that they could pay attention to other people. So that people can show that they care, acting in the daily lives of others. So that the speech “good people make a good company” is not just speech.
And obviously, opening up the team to the rest of the company, taking more of our world to other areas, and in that sense we look at 5 main steps:
- Encourage collaborative projects
- Share data (Data Driven Culture)
- Create communication channels between teams
- Make an integrated management
- Align strategies
With these tips, the process of structuring a technology team can be much easier, being able to better analyze potential talents and working in a healthy way to retain these talents.
Engagement, communication and clarity in receiving information are important, however it is necessary to remember that, when making a decision about the product or goals, it is necessary to have an open space for other opinions. Sometimes the group’s decision-making may not have been unanimous and those who didn’t agree with the group’s choice are silent, afraid to create discussions.
It is important that each team member understands that their idea will not be ridiculed by the team, everyone must give their ideas and contributions, to explore people’s creative capacity.
Another important point is that when interviewing possible new members, make sure that they will adapt to the business culture, as this factor is crucial for them to wear the shirt and deliver their best!
