Biology Reflection

1.

Throughout the biology unit we were given a lot of information, about genetics, DNA, chromosomes etc. It was an overload, but with a lot thinking and organization we were able to understand all topics that were covered. I learned a lot! I found it very fascinating to learn about why I look the way I do. Also, I now know what my blood type is and what the likelihood of me getting it was. It was a very fascinating unit. In addition, I learned about genetic variation and why everyone is’t the same. I learned this when we did the cutlery activity, I believe this is when everyone had a moment where everything connected and everything made sense. Furthermore, we learned about fertilisation and how a new human being is formed. This topic was very interesting. In conclusion, I feel very confident with my biology knowledge because we did a lot of activities and reviews to clarify everything. Plus, I studied a lot! I believe this unit really made me realise why and how we are created. Throughout this unit I started making connections with other people. I have a friend that is quite small, then I met his parents and I understood that genetics made him that way. I find it fascinating that there is a science behind people.

In this unit we learned a lot over quite a short time which was very stressful, although, it did make all of us focus and really try to understand all the given information. In contrast, when the class really had troubles understanding the information the teacher did dedicate some class time to clarify everything. For this reason, I chose this image. I remember when we were learning about meiosis and genetic variation and everyone got confused. I really appreciated when the teacher dedicated the whole double block to help us understand the info. The activity we did was; the cutlery activity. We used cutlery to be the chromosomes and on each chromosome there were different genes. Then we did the meiosis process, surprisingly, the outcome of the babies were a lot different with there only being 2 genes. It really helped me clarify how genetically different people are!

This unit really helped me understand why I look the way I do and why it relates to my parents. This is not only in my case, I also understand why my friends look like their parents. Learning about DNA and chromosomes and Meiosis was a very helpful way to learn about my phenotype. Additionally, it was something that really interested me as well. I have had multiple conversations with my dad about his blue eyes and how he inherited height. I now now how I got my blood type and what the percentage of me getting it was. That activity I still remember, the teacher asked us to bring our blood type. I was very confused why, but then I realised it was all an introduction to the biology unit. Overall, it was a great learning experience that really interested me.
