How do you link visibility and profitability — Personal Branding 101
Creating a strong personal brand online is not easy. You can start by reading this book “Branding Yourself — How To Use Social Media To Invent or Reinvent Yourself”. Somehow the book helped me to understand the basic principles of digital branding but I was still struggling to understand how to link between creating a strong personal brand and generating income out of it.
Three years ago I met a friend who taught me a valuable lesson about “Personal Branding”. She already knew what I was doing (supporting startups, nurturing innovations and exploring new technologies). She understood my capabilities and she knew I was struggling to build my personal brand has an expert on what I was doing. I’m sharing the lessons I learned from her.
The first lesson I learned from my friend was how to create an “ identity”. She asked me, what people say (think) when they hear your name? I never had a straight answer but frankly speaking, I wanted them (people) to think about Innovations, Technologies, Startups and Entrepreneurship because that is what I love to do or at least work on.
“Understanding the need to brand yourself”. People they don’t give a shit to what you do unless they see it or hear it. Post and share everything you do until it defines you.
It is possible to be visible and not profitable and it is very frustrating. This takes us to the second lesson on the concept I was introduced to, the “VCP rule”, which has been a game changer for my digital career. People invest a lot of time to be visible but not credible hence not profitable. You must be very careful with your visibility since most of the time it makes people think you are credible and if you disappoint them no matter how visible you are they will never want to work with you hence you will never be profitable. There is a reason first impression is called first impression.
A profitable personal brand identity is composed of 3 key steps (components); Visibility [V], Credibility [C] and Profitability [P].
You want to balance the three components if you want to create a profitable personal brand online. How do you know you are visible enough? When people start to call you by what you do, that innovation guy, how do you know you are credible? When people start to recommend you for high profile works. How do you know you are profitable? When you are Time Value For Money goes up. You can learn how to calculate how much your time worth here.
